A spirometer is an apparatus for measuring the volume of air inspired and expired by the lungs.

Clinical application

Device is designed to diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)so that airflow is limited in the lungs that develops with a patients with age or poor habits (i.e. smoking). The two major diseases associated with COPD are emphysema ( destruction of the alveoli in the lungs) and chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the air passages or bronchial tubes from the windpipe into the lungs). Other diseases include asthma and cystic fibrosis.
